The Willow
THE WILLOW
The tree which is the favourite of many children is
the willow, the tree associated with the moon. The size
and shape of a tree give it unique character and evoke
our response to it. Small trees, like the willow, engage
us physically. The short bole, accessible branches,
and cascades of silvery green foliage, falling in
graceful arches, attract and delight.
In myths and folklore the willow is imbued with the
powers of the underworld and the mystery of life
reborn out of winter’s darkness. For the buds of the
willow are among the first to open each spring and
leaves and flowers push together from the slender
yellow branches, yielding their pollen to the newly
awakened bees.
